Health according to who is a state of complete mental and social physical well-being and is not only an absence of illness or disability.

This definition shows that Mental Health plays a prominent role in the understanding of the Health concept.

Mental health is therefore more than the absence of mental disorders and is an integral part of health. Therefore, there is no health without mental health.

It is determined by a range of socio-economic, biological and environmental factors.

It is therefore a state of equilibrium that can be broken at any time by certain extrinsic factors as intrinsic hence mental illness. No one is safe.

The National Hospital and University Centre for Psychiatry in Cotonou, usually called Jacquot, is the only national centre specializing in psychiatry in Benin. Since the 1980s, this centre has been home to hundreds of patients suffering from various ailments (Depression, drug addiction, alcoholism, schizophrenia, etc.). The pejorative connotation of the centre itself (Jacquot) means that all residents of this centre are considered ‘crazy’ and are often left behind. Even the parents of some patients at this centre leave them there without trying to hear from them or know anything about them. This has always been a real difficulty for the healthcare team, which despite the good will is limited in the care of patients due to lack of resources and support.

The psychiatric patients of Jacquot often find themselves alone, abandoned, neglected, forgotten.

The Jacquot Psychiatric Hospital currently has about 150 patients for a staff of 55.

It is these reasons mentioned above that justify the present solidarity action of the NGO FAITH which will be made permanent.

On Saturday, September 29, 2018, the NGO FAITH gave a moment of happiness to the residents of the psychiatric center of Jacquot.

The purpose of this activity is not only to show our love to the patients of this centre, but also to show the world that mental illness is not an end in itself and that these forgotten people in society also need presence, mutual aid, affection and caring.

The assistance we intend to provide to the residents of the Jacquot psychiatric centre will consist of:

– To spend a morning at their service, helping them to clean, groom, and dress. Then we’ll help them take their medication

– To offer them a moment of songs, dances, various animation, tales of Games and poems.

– To offer them breakfast, lunch and snacks

– Offering them food

– To offer them recycled clothes

This event took place in perfect collaboration with the administration of the center on Saturday, September 29, 2018.
